Nagoya Weather and Climate: Photo of the aquarium in the summerCentral Honshu is known across Japan for its variable climate and around the Japan Alps, the winter climate can be especially chilly, with heavy snowfalls and frosty weather. However, the climate in Nagoya is influenced by its coastal setting next to the Pacific Ocean and whilst winters in the city can be cold, night-time temperatures rarely fall below freezing.

The summer climate in Nagoya is quite the opposite, with temperatures constantly topping 30°C / 86°F and even 35°C / 95°F, especially during the sunny months of July and August. Even at night-time during the summer months, the temperatures stay in the mid-20s, making air-conditioned rooms essential for a good night's sleep. In fact, Nagoya boasts more than 2,000 hours of sunny weather each year, an average of almost six hours a day.

Thin, light clothes are necessary during the hot summer climate in Nagoya, when the skies are clear and the sun warms up the whole city. However, don't be fooled into thinking that you will escape the wet, since June is actually Nagoya's rainy season and features the highest monthly levels of precipitation, and September is also often fairly damp. July and August are considerable drier and more settled, although rainy weather and showers can catch people out at times, contributing to the overall humidity.

The winter climate in Nagoya often feels colder than an actual thermometer might show, since the northerly winds often add a strong chill to the air. However, even in January, the daytime temperatures rarely fall below 8°C / 46°F and when there is no wind, it can feel surprisingly mild. By the time that April is here, the climate has improved greatly and highs of 20°C / 68°F can be enjoyed in advance of the hotter summer weather.
